Competency Based Interview

A Competency Based Interview is a:
• Technique the employers use to gather information to support the candidate.
• Technique that can prove that the particular candidate has the required skills, abilities and competencies that have been outlined in the personal specification.

The Competency Based Interview allows:
• The candidate to accumulate points based on a scoring system against each element (the points are then added up by the interviewer).
• The interviewer and the employers to gain the best indication of a candidates suitability to a role.

The Competency Based Interview looks specifically at the attributes that are required in order to succeed in a particular role. You should provide examples from past work experience to match each element listed in the job description.

Elements in the Competency Based Interview will vary from role to role but there are some common areas such as; leadership, communication, teamwork, planning, organisation and problem solving.

Employers establish the competency framework for the Competency Based Interview, this divides the job into key criteria and then they will be divided further into essential and desirable in terms of necessity.
